LEMONADE LAB
Materials:
Powdered lemonade mix
Other drink mixes with different flavors and colors (iced tea is
good!)
Spoons
Cups
Clear soda pop or seltzer (optional)
Test tubes, beakers, funnels and pipettes (optional)
Directions: Mix a batch of lemonade according to the
instructions on the pouch or can. In separate containers, mix small
amounts of the other drink mixes with water. Pour lemonade into a
cup. Using a spoon (or pipette), mix small amounts of a different
drink into the lemonade to invent a new flavor! Be sure to taste
test, and to pay attention to what happens when the colors mix as
well. Try adding seltzer or clear soda to add a little fizz to your
concoction. Using science gear such as test tubes, beakers, funnels
and pipettes makes this project even more fun, but of course are not
required.
Science:
This experiment involves solids (drink mixes) and a liquid
(water). When they are combined, the solids dissolve into the liquid
to make various solutions.
Solids are
things that hold their shape do not take the shape of a container.
Liquids are things that do take the shape of their container. A
solution is a mixture of one substance dissolved in another so that
the properties are the same throughout.
Food
chemists sometimes work for food and beverage companies to develop
new and different drinks. Next time you are at the store, make note
of how many colors and flavors of drinks there are! This is science
at work.
