EGG FIZZ  more experiments

Materials:

hardboiled egg

vinegar

glass

Directions:  Place hardboiled egg in enough vinegar to cover the egg.  What do you observe happening?

Science:  Vinegar, an acid, reacts with the eggshell, which contains a base called calcium carbonate.  The reaction creates carbon dioxide gas, which bubbles up through the vinegar!  After a few minutes, your egg will start to move in the glass as the bubbles attach to its surface then pop. If you leave an egg in vinegar long enough, the shell will completely dissolve!

Now you know why we put dye tablets in vinegar when we make Easter eggs -- the vinegar helps to break down the egg, which allows it to absorb the egg dye more easily.
